Currently owned by PBF Energy, the Chalmette Refinery has been in operation since 1915. Initially designed to manufacture kerosene for lighting purposes, the refinery eventually evolved to produce gasoline. Ownership of the refinery changed over time and has operated under several names, including Chalmette Oil and Refining Company, Bay Petroleum, Tennessee Gas, Tenneco, Mobil, ExxonMobil, and, currently, PBF Energy.

Built in 1915 on a former plantation, the Chalmette Refinery has been in operation for over 100 years in St. Bernard Parish. Constructed initially to manufacture kerosene for lighting purposes, the refinery began producing gasoline with the advent of automobiles and gas engines. One of the largest employers in St. Bernard Parish, the Chalmette Refinery employs approximately 530 workers and 500 contractors.
Over the years, the refinery has been owned and operated by a variety of entities, including the Chalmette Oil and Refining Company, Bay Petroleum, Tennessee Gas, Tenneco, Mobil, ExxonMobil, and, currently, PBF Energy. When owned by ExxonMobil, the Chalmette Refinery was a joint venture between ExxonMobil and the state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela. PBF Energy purchased the refinery in 2015.
