Shell Chemical, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, was first established in 1929 to manufacture products utilizing oil refinery byproducts. In 1967, Shell Chemical opened its Geismar plant which produced olefins. Comprising 4 units, the Shell Chemicals plant covers 800-acres and is considered to be one of the largest olefins producers in the world. As of 2014, the plant employed nearly 700 workers.
