In 1936, Johns Manville opened the Marrero plant which manufactured a variety of asbestos-containing, building materials. During its operation, the plant employed as many as 950 workers. The Marrero plant was closed in the 1980s.

Johns Manville, which had been operating since 1858, constructed and began operating its Marrero plant in 1936. Johns Manville manufactured a variety of asbestos-laden, building products, including roof shingles, pipes, and insulation. In the 1950s, the facility employed as many as 950 workers.
Due to asbestos litigation filed by workers and by those exposed in the nearby community, Johns Manville declared bankruptcy and closed its Marrero plant in the 1980s. Although the Marrero facility remains closed, Johns Manville was purchased in 2001 and manufactures insulation and construction products at other locations.
