Detail
Operating 7 mines along the Monongahela River, the Vesta Coal Company supplied coal to its parent company, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation (J&L). The coal was sent up the river via barges to the Eliza furnaces at J&L’s Pittsburgh Works facility.
The mines were identified by number. At one point, the No. 4 and No. 5 mines were joined and became the largest operating underground coal mine in the world. Employing hundreds of workers throughout its operation, the Vesta Coal Company ceased operations in the region in the 1970s and 1980s.
